Words, Meaning, Context: Building an App from Bartlett's Familar Quotations

Mobile channels are creating exciting new opportunities for book publishers and other content distributors.  This webinar looks at the challenges involved in developing an information architecture for  content-rich mobile applications using the case of the app for Bartlett's Familar Quotations as an example.  The session will be of interest to information architects, librarians, and content managers, as well as to marketing professionals looking to increase channel value.

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is one of the world's most referenced books.  Hachette Book Group recently released a mobile app version of it for the iPhone.  In this session you will hear about how a team of information architects designed and prepared content for this application.

We'll touch upon all parts of the process: the enthusiasm of our first brainstorming and metadata mapping workshops, the thoughtful articulation of search experience and workflow, the immense subjectivity of trying to write keywords for highly connotative excerpts, and the lessons-learned on a highly innovative project.

Liz Kessler, with Hachette Book Group, will discuss lessons learned building a searchable, navigable digital application from one of the world’s best known, classic reference books – and steps Hachette took in order to bring it to an even wider audience.

Kay Schlembach, of Potomac Indexing, will speak about the challenges associated with indexing the content: scope of material, framework creation, controlled vocabularies, subjectivity of tagging, connection between tagging and interface.

Finally, Mac McBurney with Earley & Associates brings us back to taxonomy which is always part of a larger content strategy.  He will speak to how to align user experience and information architecture.
